Described is a device for limiting the degree of opening of a door or window, comprising: a guide body (5) associated with the peripheral contour of a movable blade (2) and equipped with a groove (6); an operating arm (7) hinged at a first end to the fixed frame (1) and slidably connectable at a second end within the groove (6) of the guide body (5) by means of a pin (8) in order to effect a sliding stroke of the pin (8) along the guide groove (6) to define a limited angle open configuration of the blade (2); the guide body (5) is provided with two transverse openings (9) facing each other formed on the wall for defining the groove (6) to allow the pin (8) of the arm (7) received in the groove (6) to freely pass through one of the openings (9) when the blade (2) is in the free open configuration; a locking lever or latch (10) hinged to the base (11) of the guide body (5) and configured to lock the pin (8) of the arm (7) when it is positioned at the end of the slot (6) of the guide body (5) in a limited angle open configuration of the blade (2); the operating lever (12) is slidably inserted along the body (5) and has a pair of protruding wall portions (12a) configured to temporarily close the opening (9) of the groove (6) in use at least upon transition from a closed configuration to a limited angle open configuration of the blade (2).
