The invention relates to an active hinge. The active hinge includes a body bracket for attachment to a vehicle body. A hood bracket is provided for rotational attachment to a vehicle hood. An actuator is provided for selectively converting the active hood hinge from a normal mode limiting rotation of the hood bracket to an active pedestrian mode not limiting rotation of the hood bracket.
