The invention relates to glasses, glass ceramics and ceramic articles with protective coatings of hardness and toughness. An article comprising: a substrate comprising a glass, glass ceramic or ceramic composition and a major surface; and a protective film disposed on the main surface. In the visible spectrum, the substrate and the film each include a light transmittance of 20% or more. In addition, the protective film includes a hardness greater than 10 GPa, which is measured by a Brookfield nanoindenter, and a failure strain greater than 0.8%, which is measured by a ring-on-ring test.
