The invention discloses a negative refractive index metamaterial with a spinel structure, the general formula of the negative refractive index metamaterial with the spinel structure is xCdCr2X4. (1-x) CuCr2X4, in the formula, x is more than or equal to 0.1 and less than or equal to 0.4, and X is any one of S, Se and Te. The method comprises the following steps: (1) synthesizing powder by a solid phase method; and (2) carrying out tabletting and sintering treatment on the synthesized powder. The metamaterial prepared by the invention has a negative refractive index in a radio frequency band, and the preparation process is simple.
