Thermally expandable microspheres prepared from bio-based monomers
The present invention relates to thermoplastic polymer microspheres comprising a thermoplastic polymer shell surrounding a hollow core wherein the thermoplastic polymer shell comprises a copolymer of monomers of Formula 1: wherein: each of A1 to A11 is independently selected from H and C1 to C4 alkyl groups wherein each C1-4 alkyl group may optionally be substituted with one or more substituents selected from halogen, hydroxyl and C1-4 alkoxy groups; a12 is selected from C1 to C4 alkyl, wherein the C1 to C4 alkyl may be optionally substituted by one or more substituents selected from halogen, hydroxyl and C1-4 alkoxy; x is a linking group selected from-O-,-NR ''-,-S-,-OC (O)-,-NR'' C (O)-,-SC (O)-,-C (O) O-,-C (O) NR ''-and-C (O) S-; and R ''is H or C1-2 alkyl optionally substituted by one or more substituents selected from halogen and hydroxyl; wherein the thermoplastic polymer shell comprises one or more other ethylenically unsaturated comonomers other than Formula 1 having no more than one non-aromatic C = C double bond, at least one of the comonomers being a nitrile-containing monomer; the content of nitrile-containing monomers in the copolymer is greater than 20% by weight.
