The invention discloses a pumped storage system coupled with solid gravity energy storage, which comprises an upper reservoir, a water diversion pipe, a hydropower station, a transformer connected with the hydropower station, a lower reservoir and a power transmission line connected with the transformer, an upper pipe orifice at one end of the water diversion pipe is communicated with the upper reservoir, and a lower pipe orifice at the other end of the water diversion pipe is connected with the hydropower station; the hydropower station communicates with the lower reservoir through a draft tube. At least one floating type capacity expansion containing container is arranged in the upper reservoir, and a solid gravity module is arranged in the floating type capacity expansion containing container. The invention further discloses an expanded energy storage method. According to the expanded energy storage method and the novel coupled solid gravity energy storage pumped storage system, the feasibility is high, and an existing pumped storage station can be transformed with low cost through the expanded energy storage method.
