Adhesive compositions for application to ceramic substrates, such as adhesive skin compositions for application to ceramic honeycomb bodies, are provided. The adhesive composition comprises an average particle diameter lt; in one embodiment, the system includes a first source of inorganic particles and a second source of inorganic particles having an average particle diameter of about 50 nm to about 700 nm, where the first source of inorganic particles is present at about less than 15% by dry weight, where the second source of inorganic particles has an average particle diameter of about 50 nm to about 700 nm, where the second source of inorganic particles is present at about 5% to about 15% by dry weight, and a water-soluble organic binder. The inorganic fibrous material may be present in an amount of about < 15% (based on dry weight). The amount of at least one of the first source of inorganic particles or the inorganic fibrous material is greater than 0% (dry weight).
