An apparatus for controlling external opening of a door of a motor vehicle is disclosed. The device (20) includes a support (26) disposed in a cutout (16) of a panel (14) of the vehicle door (12), and a gripping handle (22) hingedly mounted relative to the support (26). The handle (22) comprises a generally elongated body in the longitudinal direction, the body being provided with an end hinged at the support about a hinge axis substantially parallel to the plane of the panel (14) of the door (12) and substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the handle (22). The support has a housing defining an outwardly open cavity (48) that in the rest position partially shields the handle, leaving a recess (50) into and gripping the inner surface of the handle (22).
