The invention relates to the technical field of plastering gypsum, and particularly discloses modified cellulose ether, light plastering gypsum and a preparation method thereof. The modified cellulose ether provided by the invention comprises the following components in parts by weight: 80-90 parts of cellulose ether, 5-10 parts of a dispersing agent and 5-10 parts of a water reducing agent, the dispersing agent is prepared from polyoxyethylene biphenylethylene phenyl ether; furthermore, the dispersing agent further comprises one or more of polyoxyethylene alkylphenol ether, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate and sodium pyrophosphate; the invention further provides light plastering gypsum prepared from the modified cellulose ether and a preparation method of the light plastering gypsum. The modified cellulose ether provided by the invention has excellent water retention performance, and can ensure complete hydration of the plastering gypsum, so that the construction performance of the lightweight plastering gypsum is improved.
