The invention relates to a tamping device (W1) for a track tamping machine (A), comprising a plurality of tamping tool pairs (7, 8) which are arranged on a support (4) and are designed as rockers (13), said support being guided in a tamping device frame in a height-adjustable manner, the lower-end pick ends (10) of the tamping tool pairs for insertion into the ballast bed are driven opposite each other by means of a linear oscillating drive (2) and can be hydraulically fed relative to each other.
