The invention provides a method for producing a calcined clay having a desired color characteristic wherein said method comprises:-a step of calcining the clay in a calcining furnace (6), said calcining step being carried out under stoichiometric or oxidizing conditions, a step of reducing the iron (III) oxides present in the calcined clay in a reduction system (7) separate from the calcining furnace (6) by injecting a reducing gas (15) containing hydrogen atoms and placed in direct contact with the calcined clay.
