Disclosed herein are systems and methods for synthesizing a polymer-derived ceramic material comprising a silicon oxycarbide comprising a silicon metal. In some embodiments, silicon metal is formed by carbothermal reduction during thermal treatment. In some embodiments, the heat treatment includes microwave plasma treatment. In some embodiments, the silicon metal forms nanodomains within the structure of the silicon oxycarbide ceramic material.
