The invention relates to a method for preparing boron carbide powder by adopting a vertical smelting furnace, and belongs to the field of preparation of boron carbide materials. The method comprises the following steps: uniformly mixing a boron source material and a carbon source material; after a furnace top sealing cover covers the top end of the furnace body, a graphite electrode is inserted and is in contact with a bottom plate valve; after the raw materials are put into the furnace body, voltage and current are adjusted for heating; in the heating period, along with the temperature rise of the smelting raw materials, according to different temperature stages, the graphite electrode is lifted through an automatic lifting device, and the insertion depth of the graphite electrode is dynamically adjusted; and heating to 1900-2300 DEG C to obtain the boron carbide material. In the process of preparing the boron carbide through the method, the position of the graphite electrode is dynamically adjusted through the automatic lifting device so as to accurately control the crystallization process and the smelting process of the boron carbide, the generated boron carbide product is taken out through the bottom discharging device, and the method has the advantages of being simple in process, high in temperature rising speed, capable of achieving large-scale production and the like.
