The invention relates to the technical field of concrete, and discloses a viscosity reduction type polycarboxylate superplasticizer and a preparation method thereof.The preparation method comprises the steps that unsaturated polyether macromonomers and deionized water are added into a reactor, a stirring pump is started for stirring, a chain initiator and a chain transfer agent serve as a material A, a small monomer unit of unsaturated acid and modified chitosan serve as a material B, and the materials A and B are mixed uniformly; the preparation method comprises the following steps: adding a material A and a material B after an unsaturated polyether macromonomer is dissolved, carrying out heat preservation after the material A and the material B are dropwise added, and adding alkali to adjust the pH value to obtain the viscosity-reducing polycarboxylic acid water reducer, so that a structure with relatively small molecular weight is selected to enable polycarboxylic acid molecules to have relatively good extensibility, and the polycarboxylic acid molecules with short side chains form a water layer film with relatively low thickness in concrete; therefore, more free water is released to reduce the viscosity of the concrete.
