Provided is a silicon nitride powder in which the fluorine content is 600 mass ppm or less, the carbon content is 0.1 mass% or less, and the alpha rate of the silicon nitride powder is 80% or more. Provided is a method for producing a silicon nitride powder, the method comprising: a filling step for filling a container with a raw material powder containing a silicon powder and having a fluoride content of 1 part by mass or less relative to 100 parts by mass of the silicon powder so that the bulk density is 0.7 g/cm3 or more and the filling height of the raw material powder is 15-80 mm; a firing step in which the raw material powder filled in the container is fired in an atmosphere containing nitrogen gas to obtain a fired product containing silicon nitride; and a pulverizing step for pulverizing the fired product.
