The invention is suitable for the field of water control technical devices, and provides an automatic lifting retaining dam which comprises a retaining dam body and a base, a supporting mechanism is installed between the retaining dam body and the base, a control unit is installed in the base and composed of sensors and a controller, and the sensors are distributed on the retaining dam body and the base in an array mode; the controller is connected with the supporting mechanism; the sensor senses water level changes, the controller controls the supporting mechanism to be adjusted in a telescopic mode, the height of the water retaining dam body is controlled, and the supporting mechanism controls the water retaining dam body to rise to block water flow. After the sensor senses that the water level is lowered, the controller controls the supporting mechanism to drive the water retaining dam body to be lowered along with the water level until the initial form; when the water retaining dam is used, a large number of personnel are not needed for guarding, time-consuming and labor-consuming gunny bag filling and gunny bag height increasing are not needed, and the water retaining dam can automatically lift the water retaining barrier according to the increase of the water level; labor and time are saved, and working efficiency is relatively improved.
