Provided in the present invention is a ceramic material comprising ZnO as a main component and comprising an additive comprising at least one compound comprising a metal element selected from Bi, Y, Cr, Co, Mn, Ni, and Sb, and a dopant comprising at least one compound comprising a metal cation selected from Al < 3 + >, B < 3 + >, Ba < 2 + >, and Si < 4 + >, the additive comprising at least one compound comprising a metal element selected from the group consisting of Bi, Y, Cr, Co, Mn, Ni, and Sb, and the dopant comprising at least one compound comprising a metal cation selected from the group consisting of Al < 3 + >, B < 3 + >, Ba < 2 + >, and Si < 4 + >. The invention further relates to a method for producing said ceramic material and to a method for producing a varistor comprising a ceramic body containing said ceramic material.
