The invention provides an automatic water surface cleaning device and method in the technical field of petrochemical sewage cleaning. The device comprises a suspension assembly and a cleaning assembly, the outer barrel is vertically arranged at the bottom end of the middle part of the suspension assembly; the up-down floating barrel is arranged in the outer barrel, the bottom of the up-down floating barrel is of a hollow structure, the outer wall of the up-down floating barrel symmetrically extends outwards to form a plurality of guide rods, the end part of each guide rod is provided with a guide wheel, and each guide wheel is in rolling connection with the inner wall of the outer barrel; the filter barrel is arranged in the up-down floating barrel; the motor is arranged in the outer barrel, the power output end of the motor faces upwards, and the motor is connected with the bottom end of the up-down floating barrel; the water pump is arranged in the outer barrel, and the input end of the water pump is communicated with the upper floating barrel and the lower floating barrel; and the garbage collecting box is communicated with the output end of the water pump. The water surface cleaning device has the advantages that the reliability of water surface cleaning is greatly improved, and the labor cost of water surface cleaning is greatly reduced.
