Impregnation of ceramic composites
A process for the post-treatment of an electroceramic composite material is disclosed. The process comprises introducing an electroceramic composite material and a flowable organometallic compound into a pressure chamber, and degassing (1) the electroceramic composite material by creating a vacuum or negative pressure in the pressure chamber while immersing (2) the electroceramic composite material in the organometallic compound. The pressure is then raised to atmospheric pressure, wherein the flowable organometallic compound is absorbed (3) into at least part of the pores of the composite material. Then, the electroceramic composite containing the organometallic compound absorbed into the pores is treated (4) with water, water vapor and/or other chemicals, thereby producing a metal oxide impregnated electroceramic material containing the solid metal oxide absorbed into the pores. Alternatively to flowable organometallic compounds, a suspension of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles may be used for post-treatment.
