The self-locking building block comprises a square building block main body, vegetation planting grooves; the front groove is arranged across the vegetation planting groove; the front connecting block is arranged on the surface, opposite to the surface where the front groove is located, of the building block main body, and is matched with the front groove; the vertical projection of the front groove and the vertical projection of the front connecting block do not coincide so that a gradient can be formed when the front groove and the front connecting block are stacked vertically. The soil retaining bulges are arranged on two sides, close to the rear surface of the building block, of the building block main body; the rear self-locking block is arranged on the rear surface of the building block and is a convex edge which vertically extends downwards from the rear surface of the building block and stretches across the whole building block main body; and when the rear self-locking blocks are stacked up and down, the rear self-locking blocks are engaged with the end parts of the lower building blocks to realize horizontal limiting so as to realize self-locking. The vertical ecological slope protection retaining wall is formed by horizontally and vertically stacking self-locking building blocks. The safety and stability of the vertical type ecological slope protection retaining wall can be improved, and the vertical type ecological slope protection retaining wall has large resistance to slope slippage.
