A flooring element for forming a flooring covering wherein the flooring element comprises an edge provided with a coupling element adapted to mate with an adjacent flooring element-like coupling element in the flooring covering wherein the flooring element has a decorative layer disposed over a panel wherein the decorative layer is arranged over the panel. The decorative layer comprises a brittle material, such as a ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, concrete, glass or glass-ceramic material, and wherein the panel comprises a cementitious or mineral-based material, preferably a mineral-based material comprising magnesium, more preferably magnesium oxide.
