The present invention relates to a method for preparing a TiB2 powder comprising reducing titanium oxide with carbon in the presence of a boron source, said method comprising heating a mixture of a carbon source, a boron carbide powder and a titanium oxide powder wherein the boron carbide powder has a median diameter of between 5 [mu] m and 100 [mu] m and the titanium oxide powder has a median diameter of between 5 [mu] m and 80 [mu] m, the mixture is placed in an enclosure at a temperature between 1500 DEG C and 2000 DEG C at an inert gas purge flow rate of 0.5-10 L/min/m/m3 of the enclosure; and a TiB2 powder obtained by such a method.
