The invention relates to a tamping unit for a track tamping machine for tamping a plurality of immediately adjacent sleepers (5) of a track (4) by means of a tamping tool (25) which can be immersed in a ballast bed (7) on both sides (30, 31) of a rail (3) of the track and is pivotally supported on a height-adjustable tool carrier (22), the invention is characterized in that it can be adjusted in pairs relative to one another by means of pressing drives (26, 27) and is coupled to a common vibration drive (24). The tamping tool, which can be immersed on one side (30) of the rail, is coupled to a first eccentric shaft (40) of the vibration drive, the tamping tool, which can be immersed on the other side (31) of the rail (3), is coupled to a second eccentric shaft (41) of the vibration drive, both eccentric shafts (40, 41) being driven by their own electric motor (45). This enables a simple and balanced solution for electrification of the vibration drive.
