The invention provides a method for producing a sintered body and a sintered body. The present invention relates to a method for producing a rare earth element, comprising: a step for preparing a raw material mixture containing oxide particles containing at least one rare earth element (R1, Ce, Al, Ga) selected from the group consisting of Y, La, Gd, and Tb, optionally containing oxide particles containing Sc, in which the total molar ratio of R1 and Ce is 3 and the molar ratio of Ce is the product of a variable m and 3, which is 0.001-0.017 (inclusive) in the composition of the raw material mixture; the total molar ratio of Al, Ga, and Sc is a variable (k) greater than 5.25 and less than 19, the molar ratio of Al is a product of a variable (p) of 0.61-0.90 inclusive and the variable (k), and the molar ratio of Ga is a product of a variable (n) of 0.10-0.39 inclusive and the variable (k); a step for obtaining a molded body by molding the starting material mixture; and a step in which the molded body is fired to obtain a sintered body containing a rare earth aluminate crystal phase and an alumina phase in the range of 2.7-57.0 vol% (inclusive).
