A tailgate system for a vehicle includes a first door pivotable by more than ninety degrees about a first door axis between a first door closed position and a first door fully open position; and a second door pivotable by more than ninety degrees about a second door axis between a second door closed position and a second door fully open position. When the first door is in a first door closed position and the second door is in a second door closed position, the first door and the second door are pivotable together about a tailgate axis relative to a cargo compartment of the vehicle between a tailgate closed position and a tailgate open position.

The invention provides a tailgate system and a tailgate operation method. A tailgate system for a vehicle includes a first door pivotable by more than ninety degrees about a first door axis between a first door closed position and a first door fully open position; and a second door pivotable by more than ninety degrees about a second door axis between a second door closed position and a second door fully open position.
