The present invention relates to a method for preparing a solid polycarboxylate ether copolymer, a solid polycarboxylate ether copolymer prepared thereby and a mineral binder composition comprising the same. The method of the invention comprises the steps of providing a first type of monomer, treating the first type of monomer with an acid, providing a second type of monomer, copolymerizing the acid treated first type of monomer and the second type of monomer to obtain a polycarboxylate ether copolymer, and converting the copolymer thus obtained into a solid state.
