The present invention provides a zinc oxide element having excellent nonlinear resistance characteristics (V10kA/V1mA non-linearity) by controlling the particle size of zinc oxide particles in a sintered body without containing antimony oxide. A zinc oxide element according to the present invention comprises a fired body that contains zinc oxide, bismuth oxide, and zinc stannate (Zn2SnO4). This method for producing a zinc oxide element comprises firing a raw material oxide that contains zinc oxide, bismuth oxide, and tin oxide and does not contain antimony oxide, and segregating zinc stannate (Zn2SnO4) at the grain boundary of the fired zinc oxide.
