An elevator system includes a hoistway, an elevator car configured to travel in the hoistway, and a pit at a bottom of the hoistway. The safety chain is configured to enable or disable movement of the elevator car, and the sensor assembly is configured to initiate opening of the safety chain to disable movement of the elevator car upon detection of a person in a detection area of the sensor assembly in the hoistway. The test device is configured to test operation of the sensor assembly to detect malfunction and/or tampering of the operation of the sensor assembly.
