The machine (1) has a hood (10) enclosing a milling device (8) and comprising pivotable hood flaps (14, 15) at a front and/or rear end in travel direction. The flaps close a mixing chamber of the hood toward a ground surface (3) of ground (2). A controller (18) ending a milling process controls milling depth of the milling device along a preset path during simultaneous forward or reverse travel, so that the milling device is raised into an upper position disengaged from the ground, without a protrusion resulting from raising the milling device in the worked ground surface. An independent claim is also included for a method for milling soils or traffic areas.
