The machine has a drum housing for surrounding an operating drum i.e. milling drum (5), supported from a machine frame (1) and including a sealing element i.e. hold-down device (7), for closing the housing off to a ground surface. An actuator raises and lowers the element. A sensor detects force acting on the element when the element encounters an obstacle i.e. step. A control unit is operatively connected to the sensor and the actuator, and generates a control signal such that the actuator raises the element when the force detected by the sensor is greater than a predetermined limit value. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a height-adjustable sealing element closing off a housing of a self-propelled construction machine from a ground surface.
