A silicon nitride sintered body which has a grain boundary phase surface ratio per 100 µm×100 µm unit area of 15-35% when an arbitrary section of the silicon nitride sintered body which comprises silicon nitride crystal particles and a grain boundary phase is photographed. The grain boundary phase surface ratio per 100 µm×100 µm unit area is preferably 15-25%. This silicon nitride sintered body is suitable as a wear resistant member. According to the above configuration, a silicon nitride sintered body which has excellent workability and sliding properties and a wear resistant member using the same can be provided.
