The present invention relates to a modular lock, for use in a machine guard system, comprising: a lock body adapted to be fastened to a doorframe, a door, or a gate, wherein said lock body comprises a lock insert receiving portion, and a lock insert adapted to be received by said lock insert receiving portion, wherein said lock insert is adapted for receiving a locking member, wherein said lock insert is mountable in at least two distinct positions relative to the lock insert receiving portion such that said modular lock is usable for locking both sliding doors and swing doors. The present invention also relates to a locking system comprising a modular lock according to any one of the previous claims, and a locking member adapted to be fastened to a doorframe, a door, or a gate, wherein said modular lock is adapted to receive said locking member.
