A translucent multilayer floor covering comprises a base layer, a diffuser layer, and a wear layer, the base layer and the wear layer sandwiching the diffuser layer. The base layer, which could be comprised of a single film or of a plural transparent PVC (polyvinyl chloride) films laminated together or of yet another construction, has a PVC content comprised in the range from 50 wt. % to 90 wt.% and at most 15 wt.% of pigment and/or filler particles. Preferably, the base layer has a plasticizer content in the range from 8 wt.% to 35 wt.%.
