The column includes an upper part (10 fig.1d) pivoted to a lower part (12 fig.1d), and a locking assembly 16 including first and second parts 160, 162, the second part being moveable relative to the first part to prevent or permit pivoting of the upper and lower parts, the locking assembly also including a latch 18 contactable with the first part and which is moveable to prevent or permit movement of the second part relative to the first. The first and second parts may be concentric. The second part may have cams 164 which protrude from the first part and which when rotated cause the upper part to raise or lower. The latch may be rotatably connected to the second part, and be receivable in a channel 1600 when preventing movement of the second part. Also claimed is an assembly including the column and an actuator 2 which is received in the column to move the latch.
