The invention relates to a method for monitoring a civil engineering construction (10), comprising at least one first metal reinforcement (1) contributing to the mechanical strength of said construction, and an electrical cable (2) consisting of at least one pair of electrical conductors having a first end (21) that is electrically accessible, the method comprising the following steps: • a) measuring the impedance reflection coefficient of the electrical cable as a function of frequency; • b) processing the collected reflection coefficients SU to deduce therefrom the characteristic impedance Zc of the electrical cable as a function of the distance ; • c) comparing the characteristic impedance with a reference impedance Z0 corresponding to a reference state of the electrical cable so as to deduce therefrom a variation in impedance ΔΖ along the electrical cable as a function of a characteristic physical quantity of the cable.
