A seal assembly (20, 22) for a gas turbine engine having a seal (26, 34) formed of a carbon material; and a seal seat (24, 32) positioned for rotation relative to the seal (26, 34), wherein the seal (26, 34) and the seal seat (24, 32) each have a sealing surface (28, 30, 36, 38) which together define a sliding seal, and further having a carbon film (44) on the sealing surface of the seal seat.
