The invention relates to a method for operating a device (10) for additive manufacture of a three-dimensional object, and associated device (10), in which a gas flow (37) is guided over a building platform on which the three-dimensional object is built, and the gas flow (37) is passed through a filter medium (36), characterised by the following steps: determining the differential gas pressure Δp1 between the gas pressure (pv1) in front of the filter medium and the gas pressure (pn1) behind the filter medium before an application of inert material to the filter medium as the gas flow (37) flows through the filter medium (36), applying inert material (50) to the filter medium (36), determining the differential gas pressure Δp2 between the gas pressure (pv2) in front of the filter medium and the gas pressure (pn2) behind the filter medium after the application of the inert material to the filter medium (36) as the gas flow (37) flows through the filter medium (36), determining the resulting differential pressure Δpr from the difference between the differences Δp2 and Δp1, and determining a degree of application of inert material (50) to the filter medium (36) from the resulting differential pressure Δpr.
