A reactor furnace (10) for coating fiber tow (14) includes an elongate reactor (12) having a fiber tow inlet and a fiber tow outlet; a thermo-chemical reactor section (26) positioned along the elongate reactor (12); a first microwave source (28) for directing microwave energy (29) along the reactor (12) from a first end of the reactor (12) toward a second end of the reactor (12); a second microwave source (30) for directing microwave energy (31) along the reactor (12) from the second end of the reactor (12) toward the first end of the reactor (12); a gas inlet (22) upstream of the thermo-chemical reactor section (26); and a gas outlet (24) downstream of the thermo-chemical reactor section (26).
