The covering element (1) has a subarea that forms a side, and another subarea that forms another side, where a main extension direction is parallel to the sides. The former subarea has an opening (4') that intercepts running of the former side. The latter subarea has third subarea (5') that overlaps the opening in a direction (11) perpendicular to the extension direction. The covering element is made of crushable, elastic and weather-resistant material. Length of the opening parallel to the extension direction is same as breadth of the third subarea perpendicular to the extension direction. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a floor covering grid.
