The cavity wall has two skins 230,232 separated by a gap filled with insulation 234, and a closer 210 having a cavity facing seal 272 which alters shape when pressed against an object. The gasket is retractable, and either compressible or deformable; when installed it is fully in contact with the insulation. The seal may extend over all or part of the hole and have a plate 212 which extends over one or both sides of the wall and a rigid block of insulating material 262 which enters into the cavity; there may be a channel 270 within the block, containing the shape changing material, which can retract partly or fully into the slot, and can be in the form of an expanding foam tape. The cavity insulation may be overfilled and trimmed so it is flush with the end faces of the wall skins. A method of use is also provided.
