A self-activating flood barrier comprises a chamber 1 with two side walls 3,5, a dam member 9 movable up and down dependent upon the water level in the chamber 1 and adapted to self-deploy in the event of a flood, a device (77,79, Figs. 11,14), e.g. rollers or a low-friction material, positioned between the dam member 9 and at least one chamber side wall 3,5 when the dam member is deployed for reducing friction and preventing jamming between the dam member and the side wall(s). An air bag 27 is disposed beneath the dam member and is capable of deploying the dam member independent of any flood condition. The flood barrier may include a sensor to determine whether the dam member has deployed in the case of a flood and to deploy the secondary deployment means otherwise.
