A safe room 10 comprises a cubicle 12 large enough to contain a person and including an opening 14 large enough for a person to pass through, a door 16 for closing the opening 14 and including a locking mechanism 18 (fig 7) for the locking the door 16 from the inside, and a base 20 mounting the cubicle 12 and including a tray 22 comprising a fuel absorbent and/or a fuel flame suppressor (23, 24 respectively, fig 4). The tray may extend underneath all the edges and/or underneath the cubicle. Preferably it is covered by a mesh. It may include an overflow pipe. The opening to the cubicle is preferably positioned above the lowest edge of the cubicle. The cubicle may be lined with a fire retardant material. It may be provided with an oxygen supply and a CO2 removal material. The base may include a plinth. The fuel suppressor may comprise wire wool.
