Access cover or grate for use in paved surface
A road gully cover or grate comprises one or more steel strips 5 embedded in a matrix of injection-moulded glass fibre-reinforced polymer material. The glass fibres prevent the polymer flowing over the strips 5 when the grate is loaded, e.g. by a vehicle wheel, and the tensile strength of the steel complements the compressive strength of the glass fibre-loaded polymer. Preferably the grate includes transverse ribs 10 in which the strips 5 are embedded and the rib cross-section tapers inwardly from the upper side to the lower side of the grate.
