A temporary access platform for deployment within a structure 2 having vertical or steeply inclined internal walls, such as a lift shaft, pipe or ductwork, comprises a retention assembly having abutments 17 mounted on an actuator 21. The actuator is operable to urge the abutments into contact with the internal walls of the structure. The retention assembly supports one or more platform plates 15 which combine to form a load supporting floor from which a worker can operate. The abutments may comprise a surface area formed from rubber, high density foam or an array of projections to form a frictional relationship with the internal walls. The retention assembly may comprise an inflatable body or motor, pneumatic or hydraulic drivers to urge the abutments against the internal walls. The platform may comprise a support frame having safety rails. A method of deploying an access platform is also claimed.
