A method of making a patterned polariser 200 comprises providing a roll of polariser material having a uniform polarisation axis, cutting the polariser material in perpendicular directions to form polariser strips 130 having perpendicular polarisation axes (106, 108, fig. 1A), and alternately attaching the strips to an optically transmissive substrate 132. Alternatively the polariser material may be cut in one direction, the strips then being attached to the substrate such that first and second surfaces of alternate strips face the substrate. Also disclosed is a variable transmission window comprising two patterned polarisers, each polariser comprising an optically transmissive substrate and alternating first and second domains (102, 104, fig. 1A) having perpendicular polarisation axes. One patterned polariser further comprises blackout bars 110 configured to block visible light and overlapping opposing edge regions of adjacent domains. The patterned polarisers may be patterned wave retarders having domains with perpendicular optical axes. The blackout bars may be printed on the substrate, or may comprise polymer films on the edge regions of adjacent domains. Gaps 136 may be present between the domains, the blackout bars preventing light leakage through the gaps.
