A lifting device, in particular for lifting a concrete cable trough 12, comprises a frame including a crossbar 20, a handle (26 fig. 1) connected to and extending at right angles to the crossbar 20, a load engagement formation 32 extending from the crossbar 20 and load carriers 48 connected to spaced locations on the crossbar 20, each load carrier 48 having a load supporting formation 46 that can be moved between a withdrawn position and an operative position in which the supporting formations 46 are more closely spaced than in the withdrawn position such that a force applied to the handle (26 fig. 1) in a lifting direction tends to cause the frame to pivot about the load supporting formations 46 to urge the load engagement formation 32 into contact with an article 12 to be lifted. The load supporting formations 46 may pivot between the withdrawn and the operative positions. Two such lifting devices may form a lifting apparatus. The load supporting formations 46 may engage a bottom surface of a trough 12 and the load engagement formation 32 may be urged against an upper surface of a base of a trough 12.
