Environmentally friendly water intake and pretreatment system
A water intake and pretreatment system 10 comprises an inlet for delivering water from a natural source to a reservoir 12. The inlet has a net screen 16 to prevent entry of organisms, e.g. fish, above a predetermined size and includes a one-way gate 30 to allow organisms to exit the reservoir. The reservoir further comprises granular filter media 18 for water and algae filtration, and a drainage layer (20, Fig. 1) for removal of filtered water from the granular filter media to a drainage outlet. The intake and pretreatment system prevents larger fish from entering the reservoir. Additionally, shallow water formed above the filter media encourages algae growth, thus providing nutrition for growth of larva. A local backwashing apparatus 40 may be included for localised backwashing of the granular filter media. Suitably, the filter media is sand. The natural water source can be seawater, wherein the intake and pretreatment system may be located in a coastal area. A water intake and pretreatment process is also claimed.
