A barrier 1 includes a frame 100 and a mounting support (Fig 15) for temporarily attaching the frame to part of a building, so that the barrier lies in front of a doorway or similar opening in the building. The frame defines an aperture that is closed by at least two main gates 200, 230, which are arranged side-by-side. One gate may be split into upper and lower stable gates 210, 220. The main gates removably mountable on the frame, optionally using pintle and gudgeon hinges. The frame 100 is in at least two parts 110, 120, the parts being separably connected together, each part of the frame being of smaller overall dimensions than the final frame. The frame parts are preferably C-shaped, joined by connecting parts 240, 250. The barrier may be used on a building site, optionally to cover an opening to a lift shaft.
