Water conserving toilet
A toilet 1 comprises a toilet bowl 2, a passage 12, 14 which extends from the base of the toilet bowl to a drain outlet 17, a gate 18, an overflow port (36, figure 8), and a flush mechanism comprising a valve operable to regulate a flow of water into the toilet bowl. The gate has an open position which allows water within the toilet bowl to flow out of the drain outlet by way of the passage and a closed position in which the gate retains a continuous body of water within the toilet bowl and a portion of the passage up to a fill level. When the gate is in the closed position, water from the continuous body of water which is above the fill level flows through the overflow port. The flush mechanism is operable to close the valve in response to water overflow through said overflow port. Also disclosed is a gate actuator operable to open and close the gate via the rotation of a crank. The interior breadth of a downstream portion of the passage, closer to the drain outlet being may also be less than the interior breadth of an upstream portion of the passage closer to the toilet bowl.
