A ladder stabilising device having a pair of connection means 1/10 for attaching to the bottom of ladder side rails 102, each connection means having a pivotal connection 16 including a stabilising bar 15 which is pivotable about an axis perpendicular to a ladder side rail to which the device is attached in use, the pivotal connection itself being rotatable about an axis parallel to a ladder side rail to which it is attached in use. Each pivotal connection may including a U-shaped bracket (22, Fig. 3) having a top plate (28) rotatably connected to a fitting (22) such that the bracket can swivel relative to the fitting. Each bracket has a pair of flanges between which the stabilising bar is pivotably mounted. Each connection means may include a telescopic levelling device 1 such as an hydraulic ram, the device including conduit means and valve means (2, 2a Fig .1) for allowing fluid communication between the pair of rams. The bars may be pivotably mounted to the brackets mid-way along their length, or closer to one end.
